Dental Hygienist Training and Certification Process Details
To become a dental hygienist, candidates must first complete a college program in dental hygiene. This program can lead to an associate degree at a community college, a bachelor's degree at a four-year university, or a graduate degree. Admissions to dental hygiene programs typically require a background in high school science courses.
After finishing the academic coursework, dental hygienist candidates must undergo supervised clinical training with patients. Upon completion of the program, dental hygienists must obtain a state license to practice. Some states also mandate that candidates pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam, as stated by the American Dental Association.
"After completing the academic college-level courses, dental hygienist candidates must then complete a supervised clinical experience with patients."
How Dental Hygienists Help With Patient Screening
During regular check-ups and cleanings, dental hygienists assist dentists by screening patients for certain conditions. They evaluate oral health using a periodontal chart to assess the risk of gum disease and inquire about any other health concerns. Some hygienists also conduct cancer screenings, including for oral cancer, and examine the head, jaw, and neck for potential issues. X-rays may be taken to identify cavities or other oral problems.
" Some dental hygienists may also perform cancer screenings during the examination, such as oral cancer."
Recommendations and Documentation
Dental hygienists not only provide counseling and advice for optimal oral health, but also educate patients on proper brushing and flossing techniques. They may recommend specific toothbrushes and flossing products to improve oral hygiene. Additionally, they work with Gresham Advanced Dentistry to document the condition of patients' mouths and teeth, including the gums and screening results, to help monitor potential issues.
" Effective record-keeping helps providers monitor possible problem areas."
When a Dental Hygienist Treats Patients
Dental hygienists play a key role in a patient's regular cleaning appointments. It is important to schedule these appointments according to the dentist's recommendations. During a typical appointment, the patient may receive treatment from the dental hygienist. Here are the different parts of the visit where a dental hygienist may be involved.
- Health History: Before beginning any examination or cleaning, the dental hygienist will first review the patient's health history. The dental provider will then review the patient's dental records and health information. After that, the provider may address any concerns the patient has before moving on to the next step of the appointment.
- Teeth Cleaning: Following the health history review, the dental hygienist will proceed with cleaning the teeth. They will use a professional polisher to remove any build-up and stains on the enamel, as well as tools to remove tartar and plaque from the teeth and gum line.
- Fluoride Treatment: During a routine visit, some dental hygienists may offer preventative services such as fluoride treatment to maintain healthy and strong teeth. Additionally, dental sealant application may be included in the routine appointment to prevent tooth decay.
