Dental Hygienist Training and Certification Process Details
To become a dental hygienist, candidates must first complete a college program in dental hygiene. This program can lead to an associate degree at a community college, a bachelor's degree at a four-year university, or a graduate degree. Admissions to dental hygiene programs typically require a background in high school science courses.
After finishing the academic coursework, dental hygienist candidates must undergo supervised clinical training with patients. Upon completion of the program, dental hygienists must obtain a state license to practice. Some states also mandate that candidates pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam, as stated by the American Dental Association.
